Will God forgive us?

This is another great video from Renegade Cut. This time, Leon Thomas tackles the relationship between American Evangelical Christians and climate change. While the video is well worth your time, it does not answer the titular question: Will God forgive us? The short answer is no. If you are a person of faith and you are ignoring climate change because God is in control and the destruction of the planet is part of His plan, you are misunderstanding the situation — probably on purpose. Whether climate change is part of God’s plan is immaterial — by knowingly and remorselessly participating in the destruction of God’s creation, you are condemning yourself to eternity in Hell.

God’s plan includes evil acts performed by people, and yet if you participate in those acts or even just facilitate those acts, you are still guilty. Imagine if you were on a jury, and you know that the accused is guilty of multiple murders, but he’s your friend, so you pretend that he could possibly be innocent and you choose not to look closely at the evidence — and you let the guy go. He goes on to kill more people, and you are culpable for those deaths because you chose the path of willfull ignorance. Now, is it true that every death caused by your friend was part of God’s plan? Yes. But it is also true that you are guilty of those deaths you could have prevented by simply paying attention and doing the right thing.

In this case, the “friend” is the fossil fuel industry, and they are on track to kill literally every human being.

Forgiveness requires that you accept responsibility for your part in destroying God’s creation, feel bad about it, ask for forgiveness, and then change your behavior. If you’ve done none of those things, you haven’t genuinely repented, and it’s straight to Hell for you.
